What Are Verrucas?
Verrucas are a type of wart, but not every wart is a verruca. These plantar warts are non-cancerous and often grow deep into the skin, appearing on the surface as flat, thickened patches. They typically have a rough texture with raised edges and a softer centre.

If you look closely, you might notice tiny black dots, giving them a cauliflower-like appearance. These dots are blood clots, and putting pressure on them while walking, standing, or running can cause bleeding. These blood clots usually measure anywhere between 1 mm to over 1 cm.

Verrucas can be painful, as they occur in the weight-bearing areas. While they may resolve on their own, it can take time and persistence. They can impact your comfort and confidence, making the search for successful verruca treatment all the more important.

What Causes Verrucas?
Caused by a strain of the human papillomavirus, specifically HPV-1, verrucas are contagious and can spread through direct contact or by touching contaminated surfaces.

They most commonly affect people who regularly use communal bathrooms, changing rooms and public swimming pools. If there is a tiny crack in the soles of your feet, the verruca virus, which thrives in moist environments, can enter your body, causing excessive production of keratin. This leads to the scaly, rough growth on the soles and balls of your feet.

Additionally, you are more susceptible to the infection when your immune system is compromised, and you’re tired or run down.

How Are Verrucas Treated At The Blemish Clinic?
At The Blemish Clinic, we use advanced electrolysis to treat verrucas. One verruca removal session will usually last up to 45 minutes, but unlike with other skin concerns such as skin tags or milia, verrucas can be extremely stubborn to remove. It often takes more than one session and even then, the risk of them returning is still possible.

In general, advanced electrolysis is a relatively pain-free procedure. We pass a low-voltage thermolysis current through a small probe into the affected area of the skin. This makes the process of verruca treatment using advanced electrolysis safe and free from any side effects. The heat generated by the current helps to cauterise the area and kickstarts the body’s immune system, expediting the healing process.

As verrucas are tough, you may experience temporary pain during and after the procedure, but this will subside. It’s important to note that verrucas are a viral infection, so they may return when you’re feeling run down.

2. Visit The Clinic
On the day of your consultation & appointment, please ensure you arrive at the clinic on time. It’s important to remember that follow-up removal sessions may be needed due to the stubborn nature of the virus.
3. Get Your Treatment
Before the treatment is conducted, we’ll walk you through the steps, and share after-care solutions to help the area heal faster. As plantar warts are particularly tough, you may experience temporary pain during the removal. Rest assured that our professionals will make the process as comfortable as possible.
Tips for Before & Aftercare
Our care doesn't end when you leave our clinic after your blemish treatment. We are here to support you and will continue to answer your questions to make sure your recovery period is smooth.
Before Your Verruca Removal Appointment
Avoid applying chemical products to the area for two weeks before the appointment. This makes the skin more sensitive and can affect the effectiveness of the treatment. Keep the area product-free and clean.
Before the advanced electrolysis treatment, you can desensitise the area, helping to minimise the pain and discomfort. You may notice a warm and tingling sensation during the procedure; however, rest assured that it’s completely normal.
Verruca Treatment Aftercare
Once you’ve undergone verruca treatment, you might experience pain and discomfort for a few days. We suggest avoiding being on your feet for too long.

Depending on the growth and number of verrucas, you may require follow-up sessions, so don’t be surprised if your verruca is still there after one session.
