How Do Dark Spots, Sun Spots and Age Spots Differ?

Essentially the same thing, dark spots, or age spots are small, flat patches of skin that appear darker than the rest of your body. These spots, which develop on the base of the epidermis, are brought on by ageing and excessive sun exposure, hence why they are also known as sun spots.

Although they typically show up in clusters, you may also see a single sun spot. Age spots can be mistaken for freckles or skin cancer (melanoma), which is why it’s best to have these screened in clinic to be checked by the dermatologist for confirmation. Sun spot treatments are usually conducted for cosmetic reasons, with advanced electrolysis being a popular option.

What Causes Dark Spots?

Dark spots occur due to excessive production of melanin. This occurs as a result of ageing and UV ray exposure from spending long periods of time in the sun or on tanning beds. When the skin is exposed to the sun, it starts the rapid production of melanocytes to absorb the UV radiation, leading to darker areas on our exposed skin.

Age spots are more common in people over 50, those with lighter skin and those with a genetic predisposition. If you are looking for the best age spot remover treatment, advanced electrolysis is certainly up there. Call us to talk more!

Sun Spot Treatment at The Blemish Clinic

If you have clusters of sun spots that you’d like to reduce, safe removal options are available and include advanced electrolysis or laser treatment for dark spots.

At our clinic, we use advanced electrolysis for dark spot treatment for the face and other body areas. It is relatively pain-free and more affordable than laser treatment for dark spots.

During the treatment, we will apply low-voltage current to the hyperpigmented region of your skin using a tiny probe. After treatment, the dead skin cells are forced to the surface, causing your skin to flake off and reveal the dermal area that is unaffected. A follow-up session may be necessary, depending on the intensity, but usually, we can reduce the appearance of dark spots in a single session.

Sun damage can be minimised by wearing SPF creams, minimising your time in direct sunlight and regularly moisturising your skin. We recommend being more careful after your treatment, to avoid them returning.

Become A More Confident You

Our Process

  1. Book Your Consultation

We don’t offer any walk-in services, so all our consultations must be booked in advance via phone, email or our booking link. This ensures confidentiality and our undivided attention.

2. Visit The Clinic

Arrive at the scheduled time on the day of your consultation. One of our skin specialists will greet you, establish if your skin problem can be treated and explain the process of blemish removal. We’ll then book your first appointment.

3. Get Your Treatment

Our advanced electrolysis procedure is non-invasive with minimal downtime. Normally, age spot removal treatment lasts no more than 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the area being treated.

Tips for Before & After

Our care doesn't end when you leave our clinic after your blemish treatment. We are here to support you and will continue to answer your questions to make sure your recovery period is smooth. For the best results and for the safety of your skin, we urge you to avoid any other cosmetic treatment for a month after your milia removal treatment. A follow up appointment is recommended if we see fit.

Before Your  Sun Spot Treatment

Avoid using any chemical-based products on the concerned area for one week prior to the treatment and keep your skin clean. At your consultation, we will run through all of this with you.

After Your Sun Spot Removal

After your treatment, you may notice some redness for a few days. Scabs are likely to develop as the old epidermal layer falls and peels off. It’s important to note that you shouldn’t pick the scabs or scratch the treated area, as it may lead to other issues. We will also go over any necessary follow-up care and offer advice on aftercare.
